Suzanne Jackson’s debut, The Beguiler, was something new for me. Having never read Romantic Fantasy, I was unsure what to expect, but what I discovered was a delightful Fantasy novel and an oustanding debut that grabbed me from the very first line.
There is a strong romantic theme to the novel, but The Beguiler is so much more than that: there’s witches, magic, a vivid, believable world, two strong protagonists, and some great supporting characters, all underpinned by a great story. The pace moves along swiftly, and the author paints a vivid picture of the story world and the characters that inhabit it. Where the story comes into its own for me though is the interplay between the male and female lead characters: it’s the heart of the story and the driving force that breathes life to it.
The Beguiler is a great Fantasy novel, and an incredible debut by a talented author.
